Nie był zawodowym wojskowym, lecz nauczycielem w liceum. Jedynym jego celem był powrót do żony, którą zostawił w domu. Lądowanie okazało się masakrą. Jedynie kilkunastu żołnierzom udało się przeżyć. Pod ogniem nieprzyjaciela wysadzili zapory blokujące drogę, podpalili schron i zaszli wroga od tyłu. Wtedy możliwe stało się zajęcie plaży i wydm. Trzy dni po desancie dowództwo stwierdziło, że z czterech braci Ryanów zginęło trzech, a ostatni został uznany za zaginionego. Jeden poległ na odcinku Omaha, drugi na Utah, trzeci zaś tydzień wcześniej na Nowej Gwinei.
